If you want to make a major change to the appearance of a bedroom in your home, your best bet is to start with changing the bedding that you’re using in there. Most people use modern bedding in neutral colors; adding something different like polka dot bedding or animal print bedding can really alter the tone of the room. Of course, you need to make sure that you know how to decorate the room around this so that it looks nice instead of gaudy.

The first thing that you’ll want to do is to look closely at the colors that are used in the bedding. You’ll want to use colors that compliment this in the rest of the room’s decor and incorporate the main colors in subtle ways to tie the room together. For example, let’s say that you get bold blue bedding with red and green polka dots. You would want the bulk of the room to be blue and colors that compliment it (such as white or cream). You would use red and green touches, such as paint trim, to tie the room together.

When making a change like this, you’ll want to keep in mind that there are probably going to be times when you have different bedding in the room. (Every bed has to be laundered, after all.) Choose a second set of bedding only after you have completed the decor of the room. In the example here, you might choose plain blue bedding to go with the decor when you’re not using the polka dot set.
