One of the things that you learn when you enter a new business is that there are a lot of things in the world that you don’t know about. For example, I was recently asked to rent temporary fencing for an event being hosted by a business where I volunteer. I assumed that this would be a fairly straightforward process. However, I quickly learned that there’s a lot that I don’t know about temporary fencing!

The first thing that I was asked was whether I needed a crowd control fence or one for traffic control. It hadn’t occurred to me that the fencing for each would be different from the other but apparently it is. The next thing I had to determine was whether I needed jersey barricades which are plastic or something more heavy duty like steel fencing. Then we got into questions of how much fencing was needed, what height of fence I was looking at and if there would be any other supplies required.

I was able to make all of these decisions with just a few calls to the business to confirm the details of the event but the transaction sure opened my eyes to all of the things I didn’t know about temporary fencing! That’s a great part of volunteering though; I’m always learning new things and they often don’t even have anything to do with the actual volunteer work!
